Vision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encouraging and spreading education about blood\ndonation among Egyptians of all ages and sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Organizing blood donation campaigns and improving\nblood transfusion Services in national hospitals and medical institutions\nworking in the fields of cancer, general health ! And pediatrics<\/li>
  2. Developing an extensive solid reliable data base of donors <\/strong>for\ndifferent blood types, aiming to offer patients appropriate donors, free of\ncharge.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Currently, the blood donors’ management department\norganizes campaigns for blood donation and improving transfusion services in\nnational hospitals and medical institutions working in the fields of cancer,\ngeneral health! and pediatrics such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. The National Cancer Institute<\/li>
    2. The Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357 (Cairo and Tanta)<\/li>
    3. Ain Shams University hospitals<\/li>
    4. Cairo University hospitals<\/li>
    5. The Egyptian Red Crescent <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Procedures that should be followed during\nblood donation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Blood donation should be implemented in\nphases, to select appropriate donors according to the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      1. The potential donor fills a donation form that includes:\n
          \n
        • Personal and contact information, to enable contacting him as regular blood donor<\/li>\n
        • The medical history and factors that may affect or prevent blood donation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          \n
        • Medical examination and history review phase: done by one of the campaign’s trained physicians. This is the last phase to select appropriate donor:\n
            \n
          • The medical history should be free of any blood donation hinders<\/li>\n
          • The age should be between 18 and 60 <\/li>\n
          • Blood pressure must be 120\/80<\/li>\n
          • Hemoglobin ratio must be more than 12gm, for the benefit of the donor and the quality of the blood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            \n
          • The blood donation phase: to be done under the supervision of specialized trained medical team, while the donor is resting on a specially equipped chair for his safety and comfort, medical supplies used has to be sterilized, disposable and compliant to quality standards<\/li>\n
            \n
          • Preparing the donor to leave and giving him juices and drinks to guaranty his safety<\/li>\n
            \n
          • Examining the donors’ samples phase: the samples are examined in special laboratories, the donors are contacted to be informed about the examination outcome, their blood type, and the appropriate time for the next donation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nThe blood donors’ management department statistics from 1999 to 2016<\/strong>\n

            The\nhistory of <\/strong>the blood donors’ management department<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The beginning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            It all started at the end of the\nnineties, when we had to deal with serious shortages in the supply of safe blood for cancer patients at the National Cancer\nInstitute, which relied on donors who sell their\nblood for money. For instance, in 1998, the\nNational Cancer Institute (NCI) spent the amount of L.E.3 millions to ensure its needs of safe blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Back then, the AFNCI was prompt to extend\nsupport relying itself on best practices and expertise in\nthis field<\/strong>. It resorted to Dr.\nAdel Ragab, Blood Bank consultant and Dr.Mahmoud Abou\nEl Fettouh, an Egyptian American Expert in collaboration with the American\nAssociation of Blood Banks (aabb) to structure a comprehensive\nprogram <\/strong>which aimed at organizing<\/strong> and coordinating\ndifferent blood drives for the provision of the required quantity of free safe\nblood for the NCI<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            For the implementation of this program, AFNCI recruited and trained a team of professionals capable\nof spreading awareness and changing perceptions <\/strong>with respect to blood donation within the community. No\ncampaigns were to take place in streets or public\nsquares; instead safe destinations such as churches, mosques,\nfirms, factories were selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Thanks to the generosity and response\nof blood donors and program sponsors such as Dr Mr. Mohamed Abouel\nEinein, Chairman of the board of directors of Ceramica Cleopatra Co.\nwho supported the program for 10 consecutive years, the AFNCI was able\nto meet the needs of the NCI with the provision of a yearly average of 19000 blood sacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The blood donors’ management department’s\nVision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Encouraging donors and educating them about the rules\nof regular donation and spreading the idea among Egyptians of all ages and\nsectors<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The association’s role to achieve this vision<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            In 1999 the association took over forming a team whose\nmission is to organize regular blood donation campaigns throughout the year,\nthrough a comprehensive training program to encourage donors to donate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The blood donors’ management\ndepartment’s goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Establishing regular donors database through a program that\nwas applied for the first time in the Middle East, aiming to organize campaigns\nto offer safe, free of charge, blood to meet the institute’s needs of blood and\nits components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Regarding\nAFNCI’s development of blood transfusion service in the NCI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Since\nAFNCI took over the responsibility of affording safe, free, blood for cancer\npatients, it could meet all the institute’s needs of blood, and 50% of its\nneeds of platelets. AFNCI could guaranty high quality safe blood, and eliminate\nthe professional blood sellers’ phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            The\nchemotherapy is an essential part in fighting cancer. To boost the results of\ntreatment, the need for blood transfusion increases, this emphasize the\nimportance of the association’s role to offer the institute’s need of blood in\norder to cover the following needs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Treating anemia resulted from chemotherapy
              • Surgeries<\/li><\/ul>
                • The “treatment with blood” clinic\n(blood is used as treatment for some diseases)<\/li><\/ul>
                  • Compensating the\nlack of hemoglobin and other blood components <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    The\ncooperation between the institute and AFNCI was extended to cover other areas,\nsuch as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    • Renewing equipment (refrigerators, blood\ndonation chairs ..etc.)
                      • Training the institute’s physicians,\ntechnicians and secretaries on the latest techniques of implementing external\ncampaigns according to the American Association of Blood Banks standard<\/li><\/ul>
                        • Implementing blood donation campaigns in\ncoordination with the blood donors’ management department<\/li><\/ul>
                          • Guarantying blood quality i.e. being free of blood\ntransmitted diseases  <\/li><\/ul>
                            • Saving millions of pounds the institute used to\nspend to buy blood from other blood banks, and use the money to cover other\nexpenses<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                              Renovating\nthe institute’s blood bank<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                              AFNCI\ntook over renovating the institute’s blood bank through offering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                              • 4 refrigerators for conserving blood<\/li>
                              • A centrifuge <\/li>
                              • 2 screening equipment<\/li>
                              • A deep freezer to conserve plasma<\/li>
                              • Automated Eliza equipment<\/li>
                              • A device to test blood type conformity <\/li>
                              • 12 mobile chairs for blood donation<\/li>
                              • Welding device for blood bags<\/li>
                              • Hemoglobin measuring device, for donors before donation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n
